Dr. Tschirf reported on 6th UNCTAD Conference in Geneva

On 27 and 28 June 2011 the Executive Session of the United Nation Conference on Trade and Development was held in Geneva.

In the center of the meeting stood the support of Africa by the UN, cooperation of UNCTAD and the report of the 6th UN Conference on Competition Policy in November 2010. Due to the resignation of the chairman of the conference in November, Thula Kaira from Zambia, Dr Tschirf presented as his deputy the look back.

Report to the 6th UN Conference on Competition Policy

The focus of the conference included support for developing and emerging countries, the promotion of competitive practices and instruments, and the fight against hard core cartels and the abuse of market power. Finally the decision was made for further development and enforcement of competition law, for promotion of international cooperation and for consultation of an already elaborated Model Law.  At the end of his speech Tschirf stressed the importance of competition for well-functioning markets especially for consumers.
