Consumer protection cooperation – Expiry of Regulation (EC) No 2006/2004

Implementation of Regulation (EC) No 2006/2004 on cooperation between national authorities responsible for the enforcement of consumer protection laws (the CPC Regulation) is laid down in the Consumer Protection Cooperation Act (VBKG).

Accordingly, the Austrian Competition Authority (BWB) has been the authority in charge of enforcing a number of Union acts related to consumer protection since the VBKG entered into force on 29 December 2006.

The new CPC Regulation (EU) 2017/2394 enters into force on 17 January 2020, with the former version expiring as at the same date. Since the currently valid VBKG only refers to the old CPC Regulation, the BWB will lose its authority to take action in these matters as from 17 January 2020 when the old Regulation is repealed.

The BWB regrets this outcome but would like to take the opportunity to thank all stakeholders and institutions for their valuable cooperation over many years working to establish efficient consumer protection in Austria and Europe.
