Mobile telecommunications market round table: AFCA and RTR raise competition awareness in the sector

First round table on “Mobile telecommunications and competition” with market participants on 24 March 2021, second planned for May.

As announced by the Telecommunications and Postal Services Division of the Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications (RTR) back in January, the first round table on “Mobile telecommunications and competition” took place on 24 March 2021.

The Austrian Federal Competition Authority (AFCA) and RTR had invited market participants to discuss the importance of the EU’s merger conditions imposed on mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in 2012, and their impact on competition and future developments in the mobile telecommunications market.

A second round table is set to be held in the middle or at the end of May, with mobile network operators (MNOs) and MVNOs conducting talks until then. The aim of this exercise is to ensure and expand effective competition, not least in the interest of consumers. Following complaints from the market and owing to the current developments, AFCA and RTR have decided to examine the mobile telecommunications market. (See press release from January 2021)
